Department of Optometry and Visual Science Organizes Orientation for First Years (2022/2023 Academic Year)

The annual orientation organized by the Department of Optometry and Visual Science at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was held on January 19, 2023, from 9am to 12:30pm at the College of Science Building, Second Floor Room 1. The event featured a selection of reputable speakers who offered valuable knowledge and perspective to the students.

Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Akuffo, Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, began the event by giving a comprehensive overview of the history of optometry in Ghana and highlighting the department's mission and vision. He further introduced the staff in the department and detailed the different programs offered in the department. He shared information about the career path and skills needed in the industry, and stressed the importance of punctuality in the field of optometry.

Dr. Mohammed Abdul-Kabir, a Senior Lecturer, emphasized the importance of networking and building relationships in the field. He provided tips for building and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and clients, and warned students to be cautious of those who may take advantage of them.

Dr. Ahmed Abdul-Sadik, a Lecturer, stressed that the students should prioritize their studies and graduate with good grades. He urged the students to prioritize and put in the necessary effort to achieve their goals.

Dr. Sylvester Kyeremeh, an Assistant Lecturer and Departmental Exams Officer, discussed the examination process, including rules and regulations, and everything that relates to the examination process.

The president of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), Dr. Christian Anderson shared his personal experiences and provided practical advice on networking and time management. Dr. Carolyn Yanney and Dr. Melvic Amponsah Marfo who are both Clinical/Research assistants further emphasized the importance of networking. 

The event was concluded by Prof. Mrs. Antonia Yarney Tetteh, the Dean of faculty of Biosciences. She gave an informative presentation on the importance of innovation in optometry and the role it plays in advancing the field.

Overall, the orientation was a valuable experience for the incoming students, providing them with the tools and information they need to succeed in their studies and in the field of optometry. The department should be commended for putting together such a well-organized and informative event
