Realizing that the country had less than six optometrists to serve the over 20 million Ghanaians and that having a high-quality optometric educational system was central to addressing the critical eye care needs of Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 1991 started a two-year Postgraduate Diploma in Optometry (PG Dip. (Optom.) Programme for graduates of Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, and other basic sciences as a unit under the Department of Physics. This programme was run for ten years producing many sought-after graduates, and transitioned briefly through a four-year BSc Optometry programme.

In 2004, in conformity with global changes and realizing the need to produce optometrists who will be professionally competent and on an equal professional status with those trained elsewhere in the world, the programme was again revised into the Doctor of Optometry (OD) programme. The Department of Optometry and Visual Science currently runs a six-year undergraduate programme leading to the award of a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree.
