Congratulations to the Optometry Class of 2022 for completing their six-year journey and subsequently being inducted into the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC).

The Allied Health Professions Council is a statutory regulatory body by law to regulate the training and practice of Allied Health Professions as captured in the schedule of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act 857, 2013 Part One. The Council regulates the health professions in aspects of education and training, professional conduct, ethical behaviour and registration to ensure continuing professional development and fostering compliance with healthcare standards. The Optometry profession is thus regulated by AHPC.

The induction ceremony was held on 29th November 2022 at the Accra International Conference Center. It was well attended by many dignitaries including Prof. Augustine Kyere, the Board Chairman for AHPC, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman Manu (the Minister for Health), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye (the Director General for Ghana Health Service) as well as other Allied Health Professionals from its accredited institutions. The theme for the 2022 induction ceremony was “Improving Access to Quality Healthcare: the Role of the Allied Health Professional”. The new inductees are given a provisional license valid for one year to undertake the mandatory 12-month internship programme.

At the ceremony, the Registrar for the council talked about the joyous occasion for the newly graduated Allied Health Interns and the mandate about to be conferred unto them. “It is my hope that as you leave here today as graduates of AHPC, you would work together with other health professionals to build a very strong team that will place the welfare of the clients and the Ghanaian population above all other interests”, he said while ending his speech.

Overall, a total of 64 students were inducted from KNUST’s Doctor of Optometry (OD) programme.
